Tap Mun Pier is located in Tai Po District and was constructed in 1958.
Tap Mun, also known to some as Grass Island, is a popular hiking spot in Hong Kong with an increment of visitors in the past few years. With the rising demand of kaito and ferry services as well as to meet the current needs and to achieve sustainability, Tap Mun Pier was selected under the PIP for improvements, such as the provision of barrier-free facilities, additional berthing point with sufficient water depth etc.
Tap Mun Pier has a history of over 60 years. It was initially constructed without a roof cover and the local residents had been requesting the Government for its improvement. Later in 2017, the Government implemented some improvement works which included provision of an additional roof cover, enhancement of the railings and waiting area, etc.
Key design considerations for this pier improvement works include extending pier head to appropriate water depth, providing adequate water depth for berthing, improving and strengthening pier structural integrity, improving boarding and access facilities, such as adapting a ramp and a floating platform, to facilitate boarding and alighting of passengers, and improving the waiting area in terms of comfort and safety.
In order to meet the increasing traffic demand as well as to meet the current needs and to achieve sustainability, we will consult relevant stakeholders and develop a preliminary design for the proposed improvement to the Tap Mun Pier taking into account comments received, local needs and environmental impacts.
Starting from October 2023, we initially consult stakeholders on the study of the pier improvement works. We strive to develop the most appropriate preliminary design in response to various factors, such as the local needs and the environmental impacts.
